Sara Holwerda’s work is a playful exploration of the performative gestures of gender. Examining where her personal life and pop culture overlap she creates, images, objects, performances, and videos that reveal the disparities and parallels of our shared experiences of playing out societal roles next to how they are portrayed and performed in media. She turns the viewers into the work by creating interactive objects that inspire them to perform. In some performances viewers become witnesses while others viewers are invited to participate in an environment she created and emboldens them to participate in the performance. She deconstructs idealized depictions of femininity, highlighting the absurdity and limitations for expression embedded within these ideals.
